Gastronomical Tea Tourism
Developing gastronomical tea tourism destinations is amain activity of the project titled “Revitalizing Tea Industry Community Through Gastronomical Tea Tourism” funded by the Toyota Foundation International Grand Program 2020. The program focuses on depending mutual understanding and knowledge sharing among people in East and Southeast Asia to obtain new perspectives and expand the potential of future generations.
The project focuses on tea and tourism business exchange between Japan and Thailand’s tea-growing community cases: megashima and Phaya Phrai.
Umegashima
Umegashima isa former famous hot spring tourism destination in Shizuoka, Japan. It is currently encountering a halt in the growth of the tea industry and the tourism business problems and rejuvenate the tea industry, and tourism is to target inbound tourists with gastronomical tea tourism.

Phaya Phrai
Phaya Phrai is the largest highland tea-growing area of Thailand, It is located in Chiang Rai Province, with a population is Akha, an ethnic group that migrated form southern China. Most tea products are for a tea-processing company to produce ready-to-drink tea. Recently, however, revenues from tea production hove gradually decreased due to the low-price Tate of tea leaves in Thailand. Therefore, the village leaders are interested in developing the village asa tea tourism destination to generate more income and provide jobs for young generations.
